Box Score STANDISH, Maine – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-4 decision to Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Cadets will wrap up the regular season at 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the league, earning the eighth and final spot of the cut to advance onto the postseason tournament. Saint Joseph's went undefeated in league play at 9-0, earning the top seed of the tournament, and finished 15-2 overall in the regular season.
The Monks controlled play from the start and held a 4-0 advantage after the opening six minutes. Saint Joseph's grabbed a 5-0 lead on a Kara Kelly (York, Maine) tally at the 15:13 mark, a play that prompted Norwich to call a timeout.
The team huddle seemed to light a spark, as the Cadets scored twice, with goals from
Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and
Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) in a matter of 67 seconds to cut their deficit to 5-2.
The Monks closed out the first half with seven unanswered goals for the 12-2 advantage.
Kasey Jacobs (Killingworth, Conn.) scored Norwich's third goal to start the second half before Saint Joseph's added three more to its tally. Albretsen would record her second and Norwich's fourth goal of the game as the Monks wrapped up the victory with a final goal for the 16-4 final score.
The eighth-seeded Cadets will open the first round of the 2016 GNAC Tournament on Tuesday, May 3 at top-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the 8 p.m. contest.
