Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 17, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team earned a 13-7 non-conference win over Norwich University on senior day at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-6 and will have a quick turnaround as the team resumes North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Monday at home against Johnson State at 4p.m. Norwich drops to 5-7 and will travel to Mount Ida on Saturday for a noon Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup.
The Chargers scored the first two goals of the game from seniors Maryalice Gurnee (South Portland, Maine) and Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, N.H.). Norwich's Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) knotted the game at 2-2 with two goals in a five minute span.
Colby-Sawyer kept the trend going with two goals in less than a minute from Bailey Starr (Barre, Vt.) to push the home team in front 4-2. Norwich cut the deficit in half on Chapel Guarnieri's (Pepperell, Mass.) 30th tally of the season with 9:49 to play in the first.
Two more goals from senior Sara Berry (Bowdoinham, Maine) and sophomore Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) closed the half in favor of the Chargers, 6-3.
The Chargers protected the lead in the second half outscoring the Cadets 7-4 with a 19-8 edge in shots. Eight of the 11 second half goals came via the free position.
Starr led the Chargers with three goals and eight draw controls. Gurnee tallied two goals, two assists and five ground balls. Berry had two goals and three caused turnovers. Whearty collected two goals and an assist to give her 138 career points, which is good for 10th on the all-time list.
Albretsen finished with a hat-trick and four ground balls. Guarnieri had a pair of goals with three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Chargers goalie Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) earned the win after making 10 saves. Norwich keeper Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) made eight stops in the loss.
Norwich travels to Mount Ida College on Saturday, April 23 for the 12 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
