Box Score BENNINGTON, Vt. – Three players scored two goals as the Norwich University women's lacrosse team picked up its third win of the season after an 8-5 decision over Southern Vermont College Wednesday afternoon.
Juniors Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) and Kirstin Lortie (Winchendon, Mass.) along with sophomore Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) each scored two goals for the Cadets, while freshmen Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) and Janae Somero (St. Albans, Vt.) scored a goal with Somero picking up two assists on the day.
Norwich (3-1) jumped ahead with a 2-0 lead to open the contest with goals from Somero and Guarnieri before Southern Vermont (0-2) responded with a pair to tie up the game. The Cadets, who notched an additional goal prior to halftime with a 3-2 lead, would extend the lead to 5-2 after scoring three straight, two in the second half.
The Mountaineers took advantage of Norwich's yellow card as Walker scored the extra opportunity goal to cut the lead down to two at the 19:33 mark. The Cadets scored back-to-back goals from Lortie and Guarnieri as Southern Vermont ended the scoring drought at the 12 minute mark to make it 7-4.
Both teams traded goals as the Mountaineers looked to tie up the contest but time expired and the Cadets held on for their third win of the season.
Freshman goalie Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) turned away seven shots in between the pipes for Norwich as Southern Vermont's Kelsey Carrera also came up with seven saves before switching goalie duties with Sydnee Julian in the final 14:56.
Norwich and Southern Vermont played an even matched contest with the Mountaineers taking a slight lead on shots, 20-19, and caused turnovers, 11-10. Norwich managed to get the ball when it counts, picking up 29 ground balls to the Southern Vermont's 23, and win 10 draw controls of the 15 draw controls on the day.
The Cadets will return to action on Saturday, March 26 as they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Lasell College on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium for the 1:00 p.m. draw.
