Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior midfielder Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.) recorded a hat-trick but it was not enough as the Norwich University women's lacrosse team dropped 15-3 decision to Castleton State College Friday evening at Sabine Field.
Midfielders Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) and Emma Smith (Patterson, N.Y.) would pull in two draw controls with Conroy leading Norwich with two caused turnovers.
Castleton (7-2, 3-0 NAC) was led by senior attacker Kate Auer (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) with three goals, while Grace Johnson (South Burlington, Vt.) and Mariah Lesure (Brattleboro, Vt.) recorded two goals in the win. Lesure would add four assists to her total of seven points on the night, while Auer and junior Brandi Whittemore (Middlebury, Vt.) both won four draw controls apiece.
The Spartans would get on the board in just 59 seconds into the game on a Lesure goal before Norwich tied up the game four minutes and 36-second later on Conroy's first goal off a free position shot for the 1-1 score.
Castleton would score seven straight goals in a span of 12 minutes with Lesure and Auer posting two goals with five additional Spartans scoring their first goal of the game for the 8-1 score.
Norwich (2-4, 1-3 GNAC) looked to climb out of the seven goal deficit as Conroy put the ball in the back of the net off a pass from Segreti at the 3:38 mark for the 8-2 halftime score.
The Spartans would pile on six more goals in the second half before Conroy tallied her third goal of the night on her second free position shot at the 12:57 mark. Castleton would drill in its final goal of the game by Johnson with Ashley Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) picking up the assist for the 15-3 score.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Hudson (Burke, Va.) picked up her second loss of the season after coming up with four saves and three ground balls for Norwich, while Castleton's Rachel Bombardier (Pittsford, Vt.) recorded her first win of the year in between the pipes on six saves and three ground balls.
Norwich will return to action on Monday, April 6 as the Cadets host Johnson State College in a non-conference matchup for the 7:00 p.m. tilt.
