Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team battled for the entire 60 minutes, but the Cadets fell to Simmons College, 10-8, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Sabine Field. Norwich now stats at 5-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while Simmons improved to 6-7 on the year and 4-4 in the GNAC.
Seniors Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.), Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.) and freshman Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) would net a pair of goals each for the Maroon and Gold. Junior Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and sophomore Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) would record a goal with Guarnieri picking up two assists and a team-high four caused turnovers. Teammate Meaghan Albert (Lanesborough, Mass.) would also tack on two assists for the Cadets.
Three different players would score for the Sharks with senior Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) lead the squad with four goals followed by junior Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) each recording three goals in the win.
Tied 2-2 with just 13:42 remaining in the first half that saw a combine 39 turnovers in the frame, Simmons went on to score back-to-back from Oliveri and Faria for 4-2 lead at the break.
Norwich would open the second half with a goal from Segreti after scoring in the top left corner on a feed from Guarnieri to cut the Cadets' deficit into a one-goal game. Simmons would score four straight in a span of two minutes, twice from Oliveri to extend the Sharks' lead to 8-3 with 17:11 remaining in the game. The Cadets responded with back-to-back goals from Conroy and Gokey before the Sharks scored two of their own to keep it a five-goal game, 10-5.
With just 8:44 remaining on the clock, the Cadets went to work, scoring two straight from Royce and Segreti in a span of 33 seconds to shave the deficit to three. Guarineri would find the back of the next 28 seconds later to make it 10-8 with over three minutes to play. The Cadets pulled off several shots but none of them would land into the net as the Sharks retained possession in the final minute to run the clock down to zero for the win.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Hudson (Burke, Va.) would play all 60 minutes in the cage for Norwich, coming up with seven saves in the loss, while Simmons' Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) came up with 15 saves in the win.
Norwich had a 40-24 advantage on ground balls but struggled on the draw, pulling down just seven to the Sharks' 13. The Cadets would outshoot Simmons 32-21 but a strong presence from Derosier made the difference in whether the shots went into the goal or not.
The Cadets will wrap up the 2015 regular season on Saturday as they host Johnson & Wales University in the GNAC league matchup for the 2:00 p.m. draw. Simmons will host Saint Joseph's (Me.) in the finale of the regular season for the 12:00 p.m. draw.
