Ten players score in 20-2 women's lacrosse win

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's lacrosse team won its second game of the season on Sunday following a 20-2 win over Southern Vermont College.

The Cadets improve to 2-2 overall, while Southern Vermont falls to 1-2 on the year.

Seniors Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.), Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.), and sophomore midfielder Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.), each scored three goals with sophomore Kirstin Lortie (Winchendon, Mass.), senior Emma Smith (Patterson, N.Y.), junior Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), and freshman Teresa Segreti (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) all posting two goals for NU.  

Royce would post a team-high six points on the hat-trick along with three assists on the day with Conroy adding two assists to her five points in the win. Eight different players were credited with at least one caused turnovers with Guarnieri leading the squad with two caused turnovers.

Norwich would get on the board 30 seconds into the opening draw with Royce recording her first goal on a free position shot. Sophomore midfielder Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) would put Southern Vermont on the board 20 seconds later before the Cadets' scoring spree begun with 10 straight goals that saw goals from Royce, Guarnieri, Conroy, Gokey, and Segreti.

The Mountaineers would notch their second goal of the game on a free position shot from Orrell before Norwich posted two more goals from Smith and Royce to close out the first half with a 12-2 lead.

Norwich would tack on eight more goals in the second half with solo goals from Katie Quebec (Nashua, N.H.), Caroline Manning (Duxbury, Mass.), and Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) as the Cadets outshot the Mountaineers, 33-14 and came up with 21 ground balls to Southern Vermont's 17.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Hudson (Burke, Va.) started in the net and collected seven saves on nine shots, along with a team-high four ground balls, to earn her first victory of the season for Norwich, while Southern Vermont's Kelsey Carrera (Queensbury, N.Y.) posted nine saves on 29 shots faced to go along with the five ground balls.

Norwich will travel south to Auburndale, Mass. on Wednesday, April 1 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup against Lasell College. The first draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
