Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Greer Gilbert scored with 27 seconds remaining in overtime to break an 8-8 tie and lead the No. 3 Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 overtime win against the seventh-seeded Cadets of Norwich University on Friday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament semifinal.
With the win, the Sharks improve to 10-3 and advance to their first-ever GNAC championship game, while the Cadets drop to 6-8.
Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) led the Cadets with three goals and two assists. Chandler Camlin (Stamford, Conn.) added two goals, while Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.), Larissa Gokey (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and Gina Conroy (Amherst, N.H.) all added a goal each.
Gilbert and Rachel Wallace both totaled three goals and an assist for the Sharks. Stephanie Oliveri added two goals and an assist, while Callie Warnock added one goal.
The Cadets opened the game by taking a 3-1 lead. After trailing by two for over nine minutes, Wallace netted a free-position shot to bring the Sharks within one a 3-2 with 1:27 left in the first half. Norwich used 14 seconds to get the goal back as Fitzpatrick scored at 1:13. The Sharks were not willing to settle, however, and scored two more times in a span of 35 seconds to tie the score at 4-4 entering halftime.
Following the half, the two teams traded goals for the entire half and the game. The Cadets never relinquished the lead, but the half saw four ties and four one-goal advantages for the Cadets.
After 5:33 of scoreless overtime action, Gilbert netted what would prove to be the game-winning goal on a breakaway. The Sharks won the final draw control and the Cadets did not have an opportunity to even the score.
Norwich goaltender Cheyenne Mata-Notel (East Hampton, N.Y.) recorded 10 saves in net for the Cadets. Simmons netminder Crystal Derosier recorded 12 saves in net as the Cadets held a narrow 20-19 advantage in shots-on-goal. The Sharks outshot the Cadets 29-25 overall.
Fitzpatrick led the Cadets in draw controls with seven and ground balls with four. Hannah McGoldrick totaled a game-high seven draw controls for the Sharks, and Wallace posted a team-best five ground balls.
The Cadets will play one final non-conference game on May 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Castleton to wrap up the season.
