NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Sophomore Brandon Kelly (Centreville, Md.) picked up first-place finishes in the 50 and 100-yard butterfly to help the Norwich University men's swimming and diving team to a 175-116 victory over visiting St. Michael's College Wednesday afternoon at Goodyear Pool.
The women were led by senior Janice Knoop (Cicero, N.Y.) and classmate Felicia Jones (Sherburne, N.Y.) who both claimed second-place finishes on the day.
Knoop finished the 50-yard butterfly in 30.67 seconds to qualify for her first New England cut of the young season. Jones runner-up performance in the 50-yard freestyle (27.45) earned her an A cut.
Kelly captured the 50-yard (25.55) and 100-yard (57.26) in sweeping the butterfly event. Freshman Shakeel Ballentyne (Jonesboro, Ga.) pushed Kelly in both events finishing a close second in both, finishing two-hundreds of a second behind in the 50 and notching a time of 57.32 seconds in the 100.
The Cadets would have 1-2 finishes in three other events as freshman Lance Webster and sophomore Pat Bowden topped the 200-yard freestyle. Bowden and Webster also combined to lead the 200-yard individual medley.
Adam Vaughn and Chris Hevey took the top two spots in the 50-yard breaststroke.
Senior Mike Zemanek (1,000-yard freestyle), Bowden (100-yard breaststroke) and Andy Rhoden (one-meter dive) rounded out the Norwich first-place finishers on the day. NU also swept both men's relays.
The Cadets are now idle until December 3rd and 4th, when they travel to Boston, Mass., to partake in the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships. The two-day event will be hosted by Simmons College.
