NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Mollie Fitzpatrick
posted four goals and a game-high three assists, and Kacey Abbriano
scored four goals to lead the Norwich University women's
lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Lasell College in a Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Monday afternoon at
Howard Field.
Kathleen Hennessy added three goals for the Cadets (7-6, 7-1
GNAC), who finish their league slate in a three-way tie with
Emerson and St. Joseph's (Maine) for first place in the
conference standings. Norwich will have to wait to see where it is
seeded, and who it will play in the upcoming GNAC Tournament, which
is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 21.
Lori Baldassara, Andrea Schmid, Chelsea Martin, Maura Kee and
Suzanne Whitaker each tallied one goal apiece to round out the goal
scoring for Norwich.
Ashley Slattery scored four goals and dished out one assist to
lead the way for Lasell (8-8, 4-4 GNAC). Andrea Ward chipped in
three goals and one assist for the Lasers, who miss out on the
four-team GNAC Tournament due to a tie-breaker with Mount Ida.
The Cadets got on the scoreboard just 13 seconds into the
contest as Mollie Fitzpatrick won the opening draw and tallied her
first marker of the game.
Fitzpatrick scored again at the 27:58 mark, and Hennessy
followed up that tally with her first goal of the contest 21
seconds later to stake NU to an early 3-0 lead. Markers by Martin,
Hennessy and Abbriano made it 6-0, before a pair of goals by
Slattery trimmed Lasell's deficit to 6-2 with 7:41 to play in
the first half. Hennessy completed her hat trick with 26 seconds
remaining in the opening stanza to help the Cadets take a 7-2
advantage into the intermission.
Norwich netted the first eight goals of the second half to build
a commanding 15-2 cushion with 8:09 to play in the contest.
Abbriano scored three times during the run, while Fitzpatrick added
a pair of goals.
Ward's first marker of the contest stemmed the tide with
7:03 to play, but Whitaker scored her goal with 3:31 remaining to
give NU a 16-3 lead. Ward and Slattery both scored two goals apiece
in the final 2:03 to account for the final margin.
Norwich goalkeepers Meghan Kennedy and Kellie Pickel split time
in the Cadets' cage with Kennedy making one save and Pickel
stopping three shots. Lindsay Cahoon made eight saves in the Lasell
goal.
NU held a 27-15 edge in shots, and the Cadets enjoyed a 37-26
margin in ground balls.
