Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. – Marie VanDerKar scored a game-high five goals and added one assist, and Aimee Goulette tallied the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining to lead Castleton State College to an exciting 11-10 win over Norwich University in non-conference women's lacrosse action Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Goulette was awarded an eight-meter free-position attempt from the center hash mark with 6:12 left in the contest, and she beat Norwich goalkeeper Kellie Pickel for what proved to be the game-winner.

Leading 6-4 at halftime, Norwich (5-6) pushed its lead to 8-4 on goals from Kacey Abbriano and Danielle Del Dotto within the first six minutes of the second stanza.

Castleton State (8-4) responded with five unanswered goals to surge in front 9-8. VanDerKar scored three times during the spurt, which took less than five minutes to complete.

Chelsea Martin tied the game at 9-9 with 13 minutes left, but Nicole Adams scored less than two minutes later to reclaim the lead for Castleton State. A Kathleen Hennessy marker with 9:01 remaining tied the game for the final time, setting up Goulette's heroics.

Adams followed VanDerKar in the scoring column with two goals and two assists, while Pearce, Goulette, Elizabeth Haggerty and Stephanie Paproski each had one goal to round out the scoring for the Spartans.

Del Dotto led Norwich with four goals, while Abbriano added three. Martin chipped in a pair of scores while Hennessy (one goal, one assist) and Lindsey Mathias (one assist) capped the scoring for the Cadets.

Pickel turned away 10 Castleton shots, including seven in the first half, to help give Norwich the early advantage. Abbriano added game-highs in ground balls (nine) and caused turnovers (five)

Lily Derbyshire picked up the win for Castleton in goal, stopping 10 shots. VanDerKar led the Spartans with six ground balls, while Pearce added four draw controls.

The game was even on more fronts than just the final score, with Castleton outshooting Norwich 27-26, and the Cadets holding a slight 26-21 edge in ground balls. Both teams committed 22 turnovers on the night.

Norwich will be back in action on Friday, April 16, when the Cadets host Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Howard Field. The opening draw for the league tilt is slated for 4 p.m.
