CASTLETON, Vt. – Marie VanDerKar scored a
game-high five goals and added one assist, and Aimee Goulette
tallied the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining
to lead Castleton State College to an exciting 11-10 win over
Norwich University in non-conference women's lacrosse action
Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium.
Goulette was awarded an eight-meter free-position attempt from
the center hash mark with 6:12 left in the contest, and she beat
Norwich goalkeeper Kellie Pickel for what proved to be the
game-winner.
Leading 6-4 at halftime, Norwich (5-6) pushed its lead to 8-4 on
goals from Kacey Abbriano and Danielle Del Dotto within the first
six minutes of the second stanza.
Castleton State (8-4) responded with five unanswered goals to
surge in front 9-8. VanDerKar scored three times during the spurt,
which took less than five minutes to complete.
Chelsea Martin tied the game at 9-9 with 13 minutes left, but
Nicole Adams scored less than two minutes later to reclaim the lead
for Castleton State. A Kathleen Hennessy marker with 9:01 remaining
tied the game for the final time, setting up Goulette's
heroics.
Adams followed VanDerKar in the scoring column with two goals
and two assists, while Pearce, Goulette, Elizabeth Haggerty and
Stephanie Paproski each had one goal to round out the scoring for
the Spartans.
Del Dotto led Norwich with four goals, while Abbriano added
three. Martin chipped in a pair of scores while Hennessy (one goal,
one assist) and Lindsey Mathias (one assist) capped the scoring for
the Cadets.
Pickel turned away 10 Castleton shots, including seven in the
first half, to help give Norwich the early advantage. Abbriano
added game-highs in ground balls (nine) and caused turnovers (five)
Lily Derbyshire picked up the win for Castleton in goal,
stopping 10 shots. VanDerKar led the Spartans with six ground
balls, while Pearce added four draw controls.
The game was even on more fronts than just the final score, with
Castleton outshooting Norwich 27-26, and the Cadets holding a
slight 26-21 edge in ground balls. Both teams committed 22
turnovers on the night.
Norwich will be back in action on Friday, April 16, when the
Cadets host Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) contest at Howard Field. The opening draw for the league
tilt is slated for 4 p.m.
