NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich Women's Rugby team
concluded regular season play today with a 62-0 victory over
in-state rivals University of Vermont. The win caps a 5-0
league season and brings the Cadets to 8-4 on the year. The
win also clinches a #1 seed in the 2010 New England playoffs, which
begin next week.
Junior center Katie Hathaway damaged the defense with multiple
punishing runs in the match, scoring tries on 3 occasions.
Her teammate in the centers, freshman Rose Bernheim added a pair as
did freshman wing Joya Clark. Bernheim and Clark close the
season as the league leaders in tries scored.
Also adding tries were junior prop Caroline Bell, who put on a
big show with a powerful hitting performance, junior lock Christine
Aye, and senior wing Alicia Seda.
Sophomore flyhalf Emily Baugus knocked in 6 of her 10 conversion
attempts for 12 points in the match.
“We wanted to set the tone early with some big hits and
quick ball movement,” said NU head coach Austin Hall.
“We succeeded to that end. This was our best
performance of the season and UVM is certainly better than the
score suggests. It's do or die from here on out and we
will do everything to prepare for the competition as the playoffs
begin.”
“Many thanks to our wonderful and supportive parents who
made this day special for us all!”
The Cadets will host University of Rhode Island on Saturday,
October 23 for the New England Quarter-finals. Kick-off time
will be announced later this
week.
