NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Parents' Weekend rugby at
Norwich University saw the Cadets earn a 48-0 victory over Bentley
in NERFU action. The score was tight throughout the first 60
minutes, but the Cadets exploded for a multitude of tries over the
final 20.
Up against the wind and a hungry Bentley team fresh off a huge
victory last weekend, the Cadets played defense for the entirety of
the first half and led just 7-0 at intermission.
"We played more defense in the first half than we have in a
month of practice," said NU head coach Austin Hall. "Every
time we thought we were going to attack and get back in the game,
we would make a penalty or a knock on and go right back to
defending."
Sophomore #8 Hannah Bushey's lone try of the first half was to
be the first of three for her in a breakout performance. Her second
try came from a supporting run, when sophomore center Katie
Hathaway ran 70 meters but was tackled on the goal
line. Bushey was right there to pick and go over the line. Her
third try - and fifth of the season - came from hard work at the
breakdown.
Junior wing Alicia Seda pounded in two second half tries of her
own, giving her a share of the team leading scorer mark with five
on the season. Junior scrumhalf Maria Lorentzon added a second
half try, as did junior flanker Anita Moreno and senior center
Clarissa Wynn. Wynn's try was also her fifth of the season, and it
gives her 202 points for her four-year career. She is just one of
four Norwich women to cross the 200-point mark.
Junior flyhalf Elise Fournier was successful on 3-of-6
conversion kicks. Freshman flyhalf Emily Baugus, playing in
her first varsity match, was successful on 1-of-2 conversion kicks.
"What a performance," added Hall. "We withstood a barrage
of attack and we turned the game around in the second half. We
found our peace amongst the chaos."
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Cadets
battle Williams College on Alumni Weekend. Gametime is set for 11
a.m.
