NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Ally Daniels scored five
goals and dished out six assists, and Kacey Abbriano added five
goals to help lead the Norwich University women's lacrosse team to
a 22-11 victory over Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) Tournament semifinal contest Wednesday afternoon
at Howard Field.
Danielle Del Dotto added four goals for the Cadets, who improve
to 8-5 on the season. Mollie Fitzpatrick (three goals, two assists)
and Ashley Haviland (three goals) were both key to the NU attack as
well.
Norwich scored the game's first seven goals to take a commanding
7-0 lead at the 19:07 mark of the first half. Lasell used a 4-2
spurt to pull to within 9-4 at the 13:34 mark, but Norwich ended
the half on a 6-3 run to take a 15-7 lead into the intermission.
The Cadets put the game away early in the second stanza, scoring
seven of the first nine goals of the period to take a 22-9 lead at
the 11:58 mark. Lasell scored the final two goals of the game to
account for the final margin.
The Lasers (9-7) were led by Andrea Ward, who scored a team-high
four goals. Caitlyn Murphy added three goals and a team-best two
assists for the Lasers, while Meredith Hessler chipped in two goals
and one assist.
Norwich outshot Lasell by a 50-23 margin. NU held a 51-29 edge
in ground balls.
NU goalkeeper Kellie Pickel made six saves in 54 minutes of
action to earn the victory for the Cadets.
The second-seeded Cadets will now compete for the GNAC
Tournament championship on Saturday, April 25. Norwich will battle
top-seeded Emerson College in a rematch of last year's title game.
NU won last year's championship, and will be looking to defend its
title.
