KEENE, N.H. - Jodie Dresser scored five goals,
including the game-tying marker in the closing seconds of the
second half to force overtime, as New England College upended
Norwich, 12-10, in a women's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon on
the campus of Keene State College.
Norwich (0-1) jumped out to the early 3-1 lead thanks to two
goals by freshman Chelsea Martin. The Pilgrims battled back to tie
the game at 3-3 with 10:05 remaining in the opening half. NEC then
scored the next four goals, including two by Dresser, to build a
7-4 lead with 2:45 left on the clock. Norwich answered by netting a
pair of goals over the final 1:12 of the half to trim its deficit
to 7-6 at halftime.
NEC (1-2) netted a goal in the opening minute of the second half
to increase its lead to 8-6, but NU stole the momentum with four
straight goals over the next 15 minutes to take a 10-8 advantage.
The Pilgrims cut the Cadets' lead to 10-9 as Dresser scored her
fourth goal of the afternoon with 9:05 remaining in regulation.
Neither team was able to score down the stretch until Dresser
converted on a free-position shot with just five seconds remaining
on the clock to force overtime.
NEC's Casey McFarland put the Pilgrims ahead just 19 seconds
into the extra session when she scored off a pass from Dresser.
Emily Tanguay gave the Pilgrims some breathing room as she potted
her seventh goal of the season minutes later, and NEC held off
Norwich to capture the 12-10 victory.
Kathleen Hennessy and Jessica Allmer led the Cadets with three
goals apiece, while Martin and Ally Daniels each netted a pair of
goals.
NU goaltender Kellie Pickel kept Norwich in the game throughout,
as the freshman netminder made 17 saves, including several
incredible stops.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, March 22, when the Cadets
face Division II opponent American International College.
