Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium
Sabine Field is the home to several of Norwich's varsity programs, including football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse, and, occasionally, men's and women's rugby.
Sabine Field, a cornerstone of Norwich University’s athletic and ceremonial life, has a rich history dating back to its dedication on October 8, 1921. Named in memory of George K. Sabine, Jr., by his father, Dr. George K. Sabine, a distinguished alumnus from the class of 1868, this field has transcended its original purpose to become a multifunctional stadium. The senior Sabine’s donation enabled the purchase of land that transformed into an arena not only for sports but also for various community activities, including military training and outdoor ice rinks during winter.
Originally, Sabine Field included a football gridiron, a quarter-mile running track, and a baseball diamond. It stood as a testament to traditional sports facilities, serving as the battleground for football, baseball, and track events. The significance of this venue expanded beyond sports, as it hosted the Norwich University annual commencement ceremonies until the mid-1980s and continues to be the focal point for the Alumni March On during Homecoming Weekend—an event that sees alumni parade by class onto the field alongside the current Corp of Cadets.
The turn of the 21st century marked a new era for Sabine Field as it underwent a significant transformation. Following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, the University embarked on a 10-month, $6 million renovation project aimed at modernizing the facility. This project introduced a suite of amenities designed to support a diverse range of sports, including the addition of a synthetic turf field meeting NCAA regulations for football, soccer, and lacrosse; a 400-meter resilient urethane running track; energy-efficient stadium lights; and an upgraded sound system. These enhancements have elevated Sabine Field from a singular sports venue to a versatile stadium capable of hosting multiple sports and activities under almost any weather condition, day or night.
A notable feature of the renovated Sabine Field is its dedication to community and remembrance. The creation of a hospitality plaza and the establishment of Memorial Plaza serve not only as spaces for gathering and celebration but also as tributes to the rich heritage of Norwich University. Memorial Plaza, in particular, is home to significant Norwich icons, including the anchor, the propeller, and "Sabine Sally," a refurbished WWII-era tank, solidifying the field’s role in preserving the memory of those who have served.
The renovation and subsequent rededication of the stadium were celebrated with grandeur on September 14, showcasing the enduring spirit of Norwich University. The festivities underscored the field’s role as a central hub for both athletic competition and community engagement.  The full-day event began with a rededication ceremony in the morning, followed by the grand reopening ceremony prior to the football game. Following the Cadets' annual battle with St. Lawrence, the new lights were turned as men's and women's soccer concluded the day with conference games against Albertus Magnus College.
In a gesture of acknowledgment and gratitude towards enduring support, Sabine Field was renamed Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on October 4, 2013, in honor of Fred Haynes '58 and his wife, RoxAnn. Fred Haynes, whose myriad contributions to Norwich spanned over two decades, including significant roles on the Board of Trustees, was also recognized for his athletic prowess and deep engagement with the university community. The dedication plaque at the press box is a tribute to the Haynes' generous support, highlighting their remarkable impact on the university’s legacy.
Today, Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium is more than just a venue for sporting events. It embodies the spirit of Norwich University, symbolizing a commitment to tradition, excellence, and community. This stadium continues to be a vibrant center for student activities, athletic competitions, and significant university events, playing a pivotal role in the life of Norwich University and its surrounding community.
