BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Norwich University women's basketball team headed to Bridgewater State University on Friday evening for the first day of The Cave Classic Tournament, taking on Colby-Sawyer College to open up the weekend and dropping the game by a 49-34 final score.
It was a cold night offensively for the Cadets, as the team just couldn't get into a rhythm, shooting just 17.5% (11-63) from the field on the night. Junior Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) managed to go 3-5 from the field and 2-4 from the charity stripe to rack up a team-leading 8 points on the night, as well as collecting 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Freshman Maria Draper (Laconia, N.H.) went 3-4 from the field, good for 6 points, and matched Fleury with 6 rebounds of her own.
The Cadets did put in a positive effort defensively tonight, holding the Chargers to 31.6% (18-57) shooting and forcing 23 turnovers. Seniors Shyann Josler (Thetford Center, Vt.) and Arianna Harrison (Vernon, Vt.) along with junior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) all chipped in 2 steals, but the defensive effort wasn't enough to make up for the offensive shortcomings on the night.
Tomorrow the Cadets will play in the four-team tournament's consolation match against Endicott College, set to tip off at 1:00 pm, while the Chargers will move on to face the hosting Bridgewater State Bears in the championship game at 3:00 pm. After a long break, the Cadets will return to Norwich to host the annual Hockenbury Classic with the opening game coming on December 1st against Bay Path University.
