PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Johnson & Wales on Friday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Johnson & Wales (13-1-0, 8-0-0 GNAC) scored in the 37th minute with Joulien Martinelli scoring on a header in the box off a pass from Riley McNicholas for the game's only goal.
Norwich (10-3-1, 5-2-1 GNAC) feverishly tried to find the equalizer in the second half, outshooting JWU 8-4 in the second half, but the Cadets were unable to beat JWU goalie Austin Scoggin.
Scoggin made seven saves, including six in the second half to keep the Cadets off the board.
Sophomore Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y.) hit the post on a free kick in the 65th minute and then Staige Davis' (Shelburne, Vt.) header was saved. Just over two minutes later Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) ripped a shot that Scoggins made a sprawling save on.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made two saves for the Cadets to fall to 10-3-1 on the season.
Norwich returns home for its final three games of the regular season, starting with hosting Rivier on Wednesday, Oct. 23rd at 7 p.m.
The Cadets will then host Regis on Saturday, Oct. 26th at 4 p.m. before closing the season hosting Lasell on Wednesday, Oct. 30th at 7 p.m.
