Men’s Soccer: Wagenseller nabs second GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week honor

WINTHROP, Mass. – Freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) of the Norwich University men's soccer team earned his second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week honor on Monday afternoon.

Wagenseller stopped nine of 10 shots he faced on the week to backstop the Cadets to a 2-0 record.

Wagenseller was just over two minutes away from recording back-to-back shutouts on the week, until he was beat on a penalty kick by the GNAC leading scorer on Saturday vs. Albertus Magnus.

Wagenseller stopped all four shots he faced in a 3-0 win over Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday and then made five of six saves vs. Albertus Magnus in a showdown for sole possession of third place in the league standings.

Wagenseller is third in the league with a 0.84 goals against average and ranks second with a .823 save percentage.

The Cadets have now had four weekly award winners on the season with Wagenseller winning Rookie of the Week twice, Joe Thongsythavong winning Rookie once and Andrew Kalombo winning Player of the Week once.

Norwich (10-2-1, 5-1-1 GNAC) reached the 10-win plateau for the 13th straight season with the two wins on the week.

The Cadets will travel to Johnson & Wales on Friday, Oct. 18 for a huge showdown with the second-place Wildcats and a rematch of the 2018 GNAC semifinal matchup. Norwich and Johnson & Wales have ended each other's seasons five straight years. The Wildcats beat Norwich in 2018 to avenge two straight losses to Norwich in 2017 and 2016. JWU beat Norwich in 2014 and 2015.
