NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Freshman forward Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) scored a goal and had two assists to lead the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Norwich (9-2-1, 4-1-1 GNAC) scored goals 1:34 apart in the first half with Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) and Matteo Iagrossi (Schenectady, N.Y.) picking up goals on assists from Thongsythavong as the dynamic rookie forward was a factor in all three Cadet goals on the evening.
Nemeye opened the scoring in the 20th minute, redirecting a pass from the right side from Thongsythavong off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Just over a minute later Iagrossi scored his first collegiate goal with a well-struck ball into the top left corner of the net off assists from Thongsythavong and Josue Lopez (Chula Vista, Calif.).
Lopez found Thongsythavong with a pass from the left of the penalty area that Thongsythavong was able to play back to Iagrossi who came down and fired the ball into the top left corner of the net leaving Colby Sawyer's Lucas Boetsch no chance on the play.
Thongsythavong capped the scoring in the 54th minute with a deft redirect touch into the bottom right corner of the net off a perfect through ball pass from Hunter Lortie (Manchester, N.H).
Norwich freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) stopped all four shots he faced to pick up his second career shutout and improve to 9-2-1 on the season.
Boetsch was terrific for Colby-Sawyer, making seven saves on the day, including a few clutch ones that prevented Norwich from adding to their lead.
The Cadets return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Albertus Magnus in another big GNAC matchup on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium scheduled for 6 p.m.
