WINTHROP, Mass. – Freshmen forward Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) and goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) were named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie and Goalie of the Week respectively on Monday afternoon.
Thongsythavong tallied his second collegiate hat trick to power the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Emmanuel on Friday night to kickoff Bicentennial and Homecoming Weekend. He also scored a goal vs. Castleton University in a 3-1 victory on Tuesday in non-conference action.
Thongsythavong netted the game-winning goal in both victories and is now tied for the league scoring lead with eight goals on the season.
Wagenseller made five saves in a 3-1 victory over Castleton University, including stopping a penalty kick in the second half. He also made four saves to combine for the team shutout with Sebastian Llanes (Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla.) in the Emmanuel victory.
Wagenseller leads the GNAC in save percentage and is second in the league in goals against average.
Norwich (5-1-1, 1-0-1 GNAC) has now had three players earn GNAC weekly recognition so far this season with Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) collecting Player of the Week honors last week.
Norwich has a busy week ahead with three road games on the schedule over the next seven days. The Cadets start with a conference matchup at Suffolk on Wednesday before traveling to Anna Maria and Elms on Saturday and Sunday.
