WINTHROP, Mass. – Senior defender Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) of the Norwich University men's soccer team was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Kalombo earned the honor for the first time in his career after scoring Norwich's goal in a 1-1 tie vs. the three-time defending GNAC champion Saint Joseph's (Maine) Monks on Saturday.
Kalombo scored on a set piece off an assist from Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) to give the Cadets a 1-0 first-half lead. It was Norwich's first goal vs. SJC since the 2015 season and just the third overall goal the Monks have given up in GNAC play in the last four seasons.
Kalombo did an excellent job leading the Norwich defense as well from the center back position, limiting the high-octane SJC offense to just one goal on the day.
Norwich is now 3-1-1 on the season and has an 0-0-1 mark in league play. The Cadets host Castleton University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
