Men's Soccer: Norwich battles Saint Joseph's (Maine) to 1-1 stalemate

STANDISH, Maine - The Norwich University men's soccer team battled three-time defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) champion Saint Joseph's (Maine) to a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday afternoon in each team's conference opener.

Norwich (3-1-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) struck first in the 22nd minute with Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) scoring off an assist from Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Norwich's first tally vs. SJC since the 2015 season. 

However, Kuma Onyejose scored in the 69th minute to level the score at 1-1 for SJC (3-0-2, 0-0-1 GNAC) off an assist from Noah Robinson.

Norwich outshot the Monks 15-12, including a 6-2 edge in the two 10-minute overtime sessions. 

Norwich freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made four saves for the Cadets. David Walbridge made six saves for Saint Joseph's (Maine).

The Cadets will return home to Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when it hosts Castleton University in a Vermont intrastate showdown at 7 p.m.
