NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team opened up the 2019 season with a dramatic, come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over Southern Maine on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Cadet Kickoff Classic on Sabine Field.

Senior Julio Arreola (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal with three minutes to go in the first overtime to lift the Cadets (1-0) to the win. Senior Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) also scored, while sophomore Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y.) notched both assists to lead the offense.

Arreola headed home a perfect corner kick service from the left corner by Brannan to leave USM goalkeeper Cameron Atherton no chance as he redirected the ball perfectly to the far right post to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

Kalumbo tied the game in the 73rd minute by redirecting another corner kick service from Brannan into the left corner of the net after Atherton got a piece of the ball, but it deflected up over his head, allowing Kalumbo to knock it into the wide open net.

Arreola and Kalumbo had impressive debuts in the Maroon and Gold uniform after both players transferred to Norwich, along with three other teammates from Newbury College after it closed its doors this past May.

Freshman goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made three saves to earn his first collegiate victory in his first career start.

Southern Maine (0-1) got on the board first in the 36th minute when Zach Allocca buried a rebound off an initially blocked shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Huskies the lead.

Zekariya Shaib picked up the assist on the goal after his initial shot from the left of the 18 was blocked by a NU defender. The ball ended up bouncing towards the middle of the field though and Allocca was first on it and hit a perfect strike into the left corner of the net.

Atherton made seven saves in goal for Southern Maine, but ultimately took the loss.

Norwich outshot 17-9 in the game and earned eight corner kicks, while holding Southern Maine without one.

In the nightcap, Wheaton (Mass.) scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer. The Lyons needed just over two minutes of game action to find the back of the net with Alex Nickerson scoring on a header off a service by Troy Mattos. Antonio Rogliano scored in the 25th minute and then Charlie Stringer added another tally in the 55th minute to account for the scoring.

Norwich will return to action on Day 2 of the Cadet Kickoff Classic on Saturday, Aug. 31 when it hosts Wheaton (Mass.) at 7 p.m. Southern Maine takes on Colby-Sawyer at 4 p.m. in the first game of the day.
