NORTHFIELD, Vt.— Norwich University junior wideout Manni Romero (Phillipsburg, N.J.) continued to get recognized for his production on the field this week on special teams as he was selected for D3football.com's Team of the Week.
This was the second award of the week for Romero as he earned the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Special Teams Athlete of the Week in an announcement on Monday.
Romero totaled 125 total return yards on six returns, including five punt returns for 94 yards. His efforts helped Norwich defeat Coast Guard on the last play of the "Little Army-Navy Game" on Saturday, 17-14. His returns included two prominent punt returns of 42 and 38 yards which both led to scoring opportunities for the Cadets. His final punt return for 15 yards gave the Cadets excellent field position right near midfield which led to the team's eventual game-winning field goal. Romero is averaging 21.4 yards per punt return so far this year which currently stands as the best average in program history.
This is the 21st season that D3football.com has selected the Team of the Week, which honors the top player nationally at each position from the previous week. Romero earned the distinction last year and is just the second Cadet in history to make a D3football.com Team of the Week, following kicker Long Ding in 2011.
Norwich will attempt to match a feat it hasn't accomplished since 2004 when it looks to improve to 4-0 to start the season on the road against Castleton University in the Battle for the Maple Sap Bucket on Saturday at 3 p.m.
