MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—The Norwich University football team has parlayed three-straight wins to open the season into its first top 10 ranking of the 2019 season. With wins over Salve Regina, St. Lawrence and Coast Guard, the Cadets have been ranked 7th in the first Grinold Chapter New England Division III Football weekly ranking.
The Cadets received 74 points and rank behind three other teams with a perfect 3-0 record. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe WPI was ranked in the top spot after receiving 9 first-place votes and totaling 137 points while Western Connecticut ranked 2nd garnering 97 points including a pair of first-place votes.
Endicott (2-1) and Western New England (2-1) also received first-place votes as the Gulls were ranked third receiving 82 points, while the Golden Bears slotted in at fourth place with 78 points.
Middlebury (2-0) rounded out the top five teams in the inaugural poll with 77 points and were followed by UMass. Dartmouth (3-0), Norwich (3-0), Amherst (2-0), Plymouth State (3-0) and Wesleyan (2-0) which received the final first place vote.
The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) were equally represented with three teams making the rankings. The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and NEWMAC each placed a pair of teams.
The Cadets were previously ranked in 2012 when they rose up to 3rd place in the New England Division III poll.
The Cadets have gotten off to their best start since 2012 and have a chance to replicate their last 4-0 start with a victory against Castleton University this coming Saturday. The last time the team has started a season at 4-0 was the 2004 season.
