WESTWOOD, Mass. – Norwich University junior wide receiver Manni Romero (Phillipsburg, N.J.) collected the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Week in a press release from the conference office on Monday afternoon. This week's honor marks the third consecutive week a Cadet has been selected to receive an award while Romero becomes the first to repeat as a recipient in 2019.
Romero's contributions on special teams totaled 125 total return yards, helping Norwich claim a 17-14 victory in the waning seconds of the "Little Army-Navy Game" on Saturday against Coast Guard. His returns included two prominent punt returns of 42 and 38 yards which both led to scoring opportunities for the Cadets. His final punt return for 15 yards gave the Cadets excellent field position right near midfield which led to the team's eventual game-winning field goal as time expired. Romero averaged 18.8 yards per punt return and 31.0 yards per kickoff return.
Romero has returned 10 punts this season for 214 yards this season and leads the NEWMAC with a 21.4 punt return yard average.
Norwich will look to make it four-straight victories to begin the season for the first time since 2004 when it travels down the road to visit intrastate rival Castleton University next Saturday at 3 p.m. The Spartans will host the Cadets in the 11th annual Maple Sap Bucket game where the Cadets will attempt to retain the prestigious trophy after winning it back in 2018.
