NORTHFIELD, VT. – Norwich University head men's and women's swimming and diving coach Laura Dunn recently recognized her 2011-12 Cadets' team at an end-of-the-year banquet.
Dunn noted senior Mike Zemanek (Voorheesville, N.Y.) for being the men's program's fourth successive student-athlete to earn NU's Garrity Award. He joins a list that includes Peter Bue 2010; Joe Moeller, 2009; and Chris Prybella, 2008. The Garrity award is presented annually to an individual that displays leadership and distinguishes themselves athletically and academically within the Corps of Cadets.
Dunn and assistant coach Michelle Patrick also recognized the men's team for receiving the Steve Looke Sportsmanship Award at the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships for the fourth straight year. The coaching staff also paid homage to seven men's swimmers that were named All-New England at NEISDAs (sophomore Patrick Bowden, Cumberland, Maine; junior Chris Hevey, Biddeford, Maine; sophomore Brandon Kelly, Centreville, Maryland; senior Kevin Webster, Stephentown, N.Y.; freshman Lance Webster, Windham,. Maine; and Zemanek) and to three relays (200 freestyle; 400 medley; 200 medley) and three individuals (Bowden, Kelly and Webster) that were named All-GNAC and set records at the 2011 GNAC Championships.
Dunn and Patrick also announced team captains for the 2012-13 season. Rising junior Giovanna Stein (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and rising senior Stephanie Ulrich (Dillsburg, Pa.) will lead the women's team, while Kelly and rising senior Andrew Grubbs (York, Pa.) will captain the men's team.
