Women's Lacrosse: Cadets Suffer 10-7 Loss to St. Joseph's in Season Opener

PORTLAND, Maine—The Norwich University women's lacrosse team suffered a 10-7 loss to the Monks of St. Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The game marked the season opener for the Cadets, who had four previous games cancelled due to weather. The Monks improved to 2-5 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play with the win.

Norwich was led by freshman Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) with three goals. Senior Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) scored twice for the Cadets, while junior Hope Royce (Washington, Vt.) and senior Baylie Lamarre (Tynsboro, Mass.) both scored a goal each.

St. Joseph's capitalized on a six-goal performance by Cassie Diplock. Krystal Walsh added two scores, while Kat Gadbois and Meghan Williams added single goals.

The Cadets held a 2-1 advantage 3:03 into the game, after Royce and Guarnieri each scored in response to St. Joseph's game-opening tally. The Cadets lead would last for over eight minutes of action, until St. Joseph's scored five straight goals, including three by Diplock, to take a 6-2 lead with 11 minutes left to play in the first half.

Guarnieri and Fitzpatrick would both score with under five minutes left in the half, but the Cadets trailed 7-4 at halftime.

The Cadets matched Diplock in the second half as both teams netted three goals, but the Cadets were unable to overcome the three-goal margin and the Monks held on for the 10-7 win.

Norwich goaltender Irene Obuko (Chicago, Ill.) registered nine saves in the complete-game effort, while St. Joseph's Haley Nason totaled two saves and earned the win in just 30 minutes of action. Elizabeth Giacchino and Emma Astbury combined for five saves in the second half. The Monks outshot the Cadets 26-16 on the afternoon.

Fitzpatrick and Royce both won a team-leading four draw controls for the Cadets, while Fitzpatrick dominated the ground ball column with nine. Jackie Wilson and Lizzie Calnan both won two draw controls each for the Monks, while Emma Lafrance matched Fitzpatrick with nine ground balls.

Norwich will return to action on Tuesday, March 25 when they host Lasell College for a 4:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
