Women's Lacrosse: Norwich Falls to Emerson 18-2 in GNAC Opener
BOSTON—The Norwich University women's lacrosse team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference play with an 18-2 loss to Emerson College on Saturday evening at Emerson's Rotch Field.
With the loss, the Cadets fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in GNAC action, while the win boosts the Emerson Lions to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Maine) tallied both goals for Norwich unassisted and totaled a game-high five ground balls. Her first goal game at the 14:09 mark of the first period, and snapped a 3-0 Emerson run. The Lions would respond with five-straight goals to claim an 8-1 lead at halftime.
Emerson tacked on seven more goals to open the second half before Fitzpatrick would net her second tally of the day with 9:40 left to play in the game. The Lions added three more following the Norwich score to set 18-2 final.
Chelsea Phillips totaled seven goals for the Lions on the evening. She was aided on the offensive end by Tayllar Righini with three goals and two assists and Alex Corrado with three goals and an assist. Mackenzie Johnson chipped in with two goals and an assist.
Norwich goaltender Rebecca Horgan (Topsfield, Mass.) totaled five saves for the Cadets as she faced 23 shots on goal. Emerson goaltender Victoria Kanaris also recorded five saves and saw seven shots on goal.
The Lions posted a 16-8 advantage in draw controls, as three different members of the Emerson squad totaled four draw controls a piece.
The Cadets are back in action on Wednesday, March 27 as they travel to Lasell College for a 4:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
