WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich women's lacrosse team opened their 2011 schedule on the road at Westfield State University, where they fell to the Owls on Alumni Field, 17-9.

The Owls dominated Norwich in the second half of action, as Westfield's Carla Keely recorded a five-goal game and Ari Colella added another five points with a hat trick and two goals.

The Cadets (0-1) were holding tight with their opponent at halftime, 6-4, but Westfield took off in the second half, scoring four goals in the first five minutes of play. Junior Jillian Balasco answered back shortly after, but the Owls (2-1) retaliated with five goals in four minutes to make it a 15-5 game.

Norwich had the last words, with three unanswered goals at the end of the game, showing they will continue to play until the final whistle.

Juniors Kacey Abbriano and Suzanne Whitaker scored two goals apiece, one in each half of game. The freshman stepped up for the Cadets, earning their spots on the field as Courtney Saheim came off the bench to lead Norwich in a four-point effort, nabbing two goals and two assists in her first collegiate appearance. Classmate Grace Fitzpatrick tallied a goal in each half of her first start in the maroon and gold.

In net, senior Kellie Pickel was kept busy with the 34 shots the Owls put in her direction. With 28 shots on goal, she was able to turn away 11 as the Cadets were outshot 34-23.

Norwich will remain on the road for their next three games and will open their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule at Lasell College on Saturday in the noontime contest.
