Women’s Hockey: R.I.T. downs Cadets 4-1 in National Championship Rematch

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – On Saturday night, R.I.T. and Norwich met for the first time since the Cadets upset the Tigers at home in the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship game.

This time out though it was R.I.T. who got revenge as the Tigers walked off with a 4-1 win to move to a perfect 4-0 over the last two seasons at the East/West Hockey Classic.

RIT (2-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC West) struck first just 4:50 into the game when Erin Zach batted a puck out of mid air past Norwich goaltender Joanie Plamondon after Ellesha Fortuna took the initial shot that deflected off traffic in front of the crease.

Norwich (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC East) responded just over a minute later as senior team captain Melissa Rundlett found herself all alone in front of the R.I.T. goal and beat the Tigers' goaltender Laura Chamberlain with a shot short side to tie the game at one.

The Tigers took the lead for good though at the 13:43 mark of the first period when freshman defenseman Morgan Scoyne capitalized on a Norwich turnover in the neutral zone to score her first career goal.

Scoyne intercepted a Norwich clearing attempt and then let go of a wrist shot after just crossing the blue line. Scoyne's shot deflected off Plamondon's stick and rolled up over her shoulder and into the back of the net to give R.I.T. the 2-1 lead.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Tenecia Hiller made it 3-1 R.I.T at the 14:25 mark of the second period with her third goal of the weekend when she tipped a shot past Plamondon off a feed from Ali Hills at the point. Kolbee McCrea also picked up an assist on the play. R.I.T.'s Celeste Brown capped the scoring at the 7:19 mark of the third period to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Both teams had 24 shots on goal. Chamberlain turned aside 23 shots to pick up her second win of the season on her way to being named to the All-Tournament team. Plamondon made 20 saves to fall to 0-1-0 on the year.

After going 4-for-5 on the power play in Friday's 4-2 win over Elmira, the Cadets went 0-for-7 on Saturday night.

Others Tigers joining Chamberlain on the All-Tournament Team were Scoyne and Kourtney Kunichika. Elmira's Alex Bresler and Brooke Wilgosh were also named to the team along with Norwich's Kaycie Anderson.

Norwich will look to regroup next weekend as it kicks off ECAC East play with a pair of road games at Castleton and New England College. The Cadets take on Castleton at 4 p.m. on Friday and then follow up with New England College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
