Men’s Tennis: Suffolk drops Norwich 7-2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – After starting the season 5-0, the Norwich men's tennis team dropped its second straight match with a 7-2 loss to Suffolk on Saturday at Shapiro Fieldhouse.

With the victory, Suffolk (6-0, 3-0 GNAC) now has a stranglehold on the top of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings and has the inside track to repeating as the league regular season champions.

The Cadets (5-2, 2-1 GNAC) fell into a three-way tie for second place with Emerson and Johnson & Wales following the loss. NU will face Emerson on Saturday, April 14 in a crucial showdown for home-court advantage and the No. 2 seed in the four-team GNAC Tournament to be played at the end of the month.

Senior Collin Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) highlighted the match for Norwich with a thrilling three-set victory over Suffolk's Christopher Staley at first singles. Hyte beat Staley 7-5, 1-6 and 6-3 to stay unbeaten in 2012 in singles action and improve to 7-0.

Sophomore Brandon Carver (Peru, Maine) also claimed a victory for Norwich at sixth singles by beating Thay Thao in three sets by scores of 3-6, 6-1 and 10-7.

Norwich will look to get back on track and snap its two-game skid on Thursday when the Cadets travel to Johnson State to take on the Badgers in non-conference action at 3:30 p.m. Johnson State is 5-5 on the year and is coming off a 5-4 victory over Castleton.
