Men’s Tennis: Hyte tabbed GNAC Player of the Year

BOSTON – Senior Collin Hyte of the Norwich University men's tennis team capped off his illustrious four-year career in the Maroon & Gold on Tuesday by being named the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year.

Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) closed out his record setting four-year career at Norwich with his third straight First Team All-Conference honor and second GNAC Player of the Year award. He set the all-time Norwich career wins record for singles matches and closed out his career with a sparkling 36-8 record.

This season, Hyte was 9-2 in singles matches with his only two losses coming to Emerson sophomore Kevin Blisniuk. The last three seasons he has played No. 1 singles in every match and compiled a 28-4 record. He was named the GNAC Player of the Year as a sophomore and has been the team Most Valuable Player in each of the last three seasons.

"Collin had a great senior season," NU head coach Kyle Dezotell said. "H e finished off his career playing some of the best tennis of his life. Fortunately I think the GNAC coaches rewarded Collin for his four-year career, leaving Norwich as the all-time wins leader."

Dezotell has now coached four of the last five GNAC Players of the Year with Peter Hooper winning back-to-back honors in 2008 and 2009, as well as Hyte winning in 2010 and 2012. He also coached Fritz Kaelber, who was the 2010 GNAC Rookie of the Year.

Hyte was also named the Norwich Male Athlete of the Year at the annual Senior Athlete Recognition Dinner on Tuesday hosted in the Milano Ballroom.

Norwich finished the year with a 7-4 overall record and a 3-2 mark in GNAC play. The Cadets earned the No. 3 seed for the GNAC Tournament and lost 9-0 to Emerson in the semifinals last Thursday.
