BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior captain Jaimes Plamondon (Biddeford, Me.) led Norwich University past St. Michael's April 11.
In the first minute of the minute of the match Plamondon cut inside the St. Michael's defense to score his first try of the day. Junior Chris Hein (Baltimore, Md.) converted to get Norwich up 7-0 early on. The Cadets continued to retain the ball throughout.
At the eight minute mark, freshman Seamus Page (Westford, Vt.) scored from a pick and got near the base of the ruck to make it 12-0 Norwich. St. Michael's attack threatened but was unable to punch it in on their ensuing possession. Near the end of the opening half, Plamondon cut across the defense off a backline attack to add to Norwich's lead. At the half, Norwich led 17-0.
The Purple Knights were a different team in the second half. In the first minute they caught Norwich off guard and scored their first try from good support running. St. Michael's closed the gap from a penalty try in corner of the in-goal. After sixty five minutes of play, it was Norwich 17, St. Michael's 12. In the next ten minutes Norwich played a man down but was tough on defense.
Norwich closed the day out with a try from senior center Michael Brooks (North Reading, Mass.) at the 72nd minute. The try set up by an excellent run from sophomore winger Anthony Perella (Bedford, N.H.). The final eight minutes of play was contested but there wasn't any scoring. The final was Norwich 22 St. Michael's 12.
"Four forwards and three backs with limited varsity play received valuable experience," coach Bob Weggler said. "Our second forty minutes lacked the same intensity of the first half but we did retain our structure to close out the day with expansive rugby. Considering a full eighty minute match on the road, after a day of classes, the boys held up well."
The Cadets next match is at Middlebury Saturday, April 14. Kick-off is at 1 p.m. The freshmen squad plays Champlain College Sunday, April 15, at South Burlington HS. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
