NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Norwich University's freshman men's rugby spring slate continued April 17 with a hard-fought clash against Dartmouth.
The Big Green of Dartmouth scored their first try of the evening at the five-minute mark to take the lead 5-0. They followed with two more converted tries at 10 and 15 minutes.
Shortly after Dartmouth's third score, the Cadets registered a try by freshman number eight Cameron Young. Young picked up the ball at the ruck and stretched out his arms to make it 19-5. Dartmouth answered late in the half to bring the score to 24-5.
The two teams traded tries in the second half. Dartmouth's happened in the fifth minute of the half and Norwich came back ten minutes into the second stanza. The Cadets' try was from a 60-meter counter attack by sophomore winger D'Lontae Sewell. It was nicely set up by freshman fullback Tim Hunter, after he fielded a kick. After forty minutes of play, Dartmouth led 29-10. Dartmouth scored a soft try off a muff kick to add to their lead. Three minutes later, Norwich's freshman winger Dan Burkhart placed the ball in the left corner of the in-goal for the try. This came as a result of excellent 15-man rugby. The forwards forged close to the right hand corner then the backs attacked opposite through solid ball handling. The match ended with Dartmouth claiming a 34-15 victory.
"Both sides this evening displayed fine rugby for a developmental match," Coach Bob Weggler said. "The improvement in continuity and structure just compared to the Champlain match was impressive. I am proud of the way the young players are responding to instruction and how they maintained focus against a higher level of competition."
Bridgton Academy travels to Northfield Wednesday, April 18, to take on NU's freshmen. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
