NORTHFIELD, VT. - Boston University converted a try in the final minute to earn a key North-East Rugby Football Union win over Norwich University Sept. 24.
Norwich began the scoring at the ten minute mark on a try by winger junior Richard Shear, NU 5- BU0. Five minutes later BU answered and tied the score 5-5. The rest of the half was hard fought. Norwich regained the lead 10- 5 at the thirty seventh minute by freshman prop Ayida Omajuwa. Unfortunately Norwich lost its composure and received a yellow card for dangerous play. BU closed the gap 10-8 at the final whistle from this penalty kick.
The start of the second half NU played ten minutes with a man down. BU took advantage of this and three minutes into the half scored a converted try, Boston 15- Norwich 10. Norwich improved their game management at the point of contact and regained the lead at the seventieth minute on a converted try by senior captain Josh Nowak, Norwich 17- Boston University 15. Play went back and forth until BU scored with a minute left on a converted try to seal their victory. Final score: BU 22- NU 17.
"Last week UNH scored the same amount tries as us and in the end we won with our kicking. This week we did the same with Boston University, we each scored three tries but they beat us with their kicking," said Coach Bob Weggler. He added, "If I was to look at the turning point in the match it would be our undisciplined play that lead to a yellow card that resulted in ten unanswered points by Boston University. The Norwich boys sure worked hard and had their chances. We created many opportunities to score throughout the match but just could not finish."
Next week Norwich takes on a tough Holy Cross team who downed UNH 22-21 this past weekend. Homecoming kickoff is slated for 2:00pm. The pitch is now on Garrity Field near Shapiro Fieldhouse.
