Men's Lacrosse: Lavery Leads Norwich to 8-4 Comeback Win against JWU
CASTLETON, Vt.—Sophomore Mike Lavery (Penacook, N.H.) scored three second-half goals to lead the Norwich University men's lacrosse team to an 8-4 win against the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Castleton State College's Spartan Stadium.
With the win, the Cadets snap a two-game slide and improve to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Wildcats to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in GNAC play.
Junior Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) tallied two goals and two assists for Norwich, while senior Zachary McMillan (Brunkswick, Maine) recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) and junior C.J. Dolan (East Sandwich, Mass.) both scored a goal apiece.
The Wildcats saw two goals apiece from Keegan Donaher and Chris Macchi. Tyler Thompson chipped in with two assists.
Johnson & Wales dominated the first half, as they tallied a goal in each quarter while holding Norwich scoreless through the first 30 minutes of play. Donaher scored with 8:52 to play in the first quarter, while Macchi added a goal at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter.
Lavery netted Norwich's first goal at the 13:41 mark of the third quarter, assisted by McMillan. Just over two minutes later, Dolan sniped a goal from 15 yards out to even the score at 2-2, but the Wildcats' Thompson responded by winning the ensuing face-off and passing to Macchi, who fired the go-ahead shot just 10 seconds after the Cadets had tied the score.
Norwich's McMillan and Johnson & Wales' Donaher traded a pair of goals at 6:36 and 4:42, respectively, to set the score at 4-3 in favor of the Wildcats. The score would remain unchanged until the last second of the quarter, when the Cadets capitalized on a Wildcats turnover and Fuller found Mendoza on a breakaway.
The fourth quarter was dominated by the Cadets, as the hosts tallied four unanswered goals en route to the 8-4 win. Back-to-back goals by Fuller, assisted by McCarthy, gave Norwich a 6-4 edge with 7:54 still to play. Lavery tallied two goals of his own at 3:33 and 2:47 to put the game out of reach for the Wildcats.
Senior goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) recorded eight saves in the win, while Johnson & Wales netminder Mike Russo registered 14 saves for the Wildcats. The Cadets outshot the Wildcats 49-18 on the afternoon.
Senior Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) totaled a game-high five groundballs for the Cadets, while Brett Leighton paced the Wildcats with four. Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) and Brett Sewing (Brattleboro, Vt.) combined to win 10 of 14 face-offs for Norwich, while Thompson won four face-offs for Johnson & Wales.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 when they travel to Daniel Webster College for a 4:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
