Men's Lacrosse: Mendoza Nets 100th Career Goal in 17-11 Win against Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Senior Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) of the Norwich University men's lacrosse team netted his 100th career goal and led the Cadets to a 17-11 win against Albertus Magnus College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Cadets improve to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Falcons of Albertus Magnus to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Mendoza, who scored six goals in today's game, becomes just the third player in program history to score 100 career goals and joins the ranks of Scott McCarthy '97 and Nick Bishop '03, who scored 126 and 117 career goals, respectively.

With his six points today, Mendoza also moves into fifth on the Norwich all-time points leaderboard with 120 career points (105 goals, 15 assists). Mendoza bumps Kyle Marzeoti '09, who totaled 114 points over his four-year career.

In addition to Mendoza's six goals, the Cadets also saw five goals from sophomore Mike Lavery (Penacook, N.H.) and two goals and four assists from junior Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.). Sophomore Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.), junior Victor Bill (Nazareth, Pa.), and senior Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) all tallied single goals.

The Falcons were led by an eight-goal performance by Greg Buck. Brennan Moore, Mike Choiniere, and Adam Earl also scored for the hosts.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following goals by Buck and Choiniere at 9:08 and 7:59. Mendoza netted his milestone goal with 5:51 left to play in the first quarter, but the Falcons held on to the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the quarter.

Buck would score again just 25 seconds into the second frame to give Albertus Magnus the 3-1 lead, but Lavery, Mendoza and Fuller each tallied two goals each to spark a 6-0 run and send Norwich into halftime with a 7-3 lead.

The two teams combined for 11 goals in the third period, and the Falcons outscored the Cadets 6-2 in the first nine minutes to tie the score at 9-9. Norwich responded with three unanswered goals of their own to hold the 12-9 lead through three quarters of action.

Lavery and Mendoza would extend Norwich's lead to five goals before Buck would net his seventh goal of the afternoon on a man-up possession. McCarthy, Lavery and Bill rounded out Norwich's scoring efforts for the day, while Buck added one more to set the 17-11 final.

Norwich goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) totaled two saves in 30 minutes of action to earn his first win of the season. Sophomore Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.) recorded five saves in the second half. Albertus Magnus netminder Brandon Scicchitano registered 14 saves in the complete-game effort. The Cadets outshot the Falcons 60-26 on the afternoon.

Bracy won 10 of 11 face-off attempts and scooped up eight ground balls for Norwich on the afternoon, while senior Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) totaled a team-best nine ground balls. Buck and Earl both tallied three ground balls for the Falcons.

Norwich will look for its second straight GNAC win on Tuesday, March 25 when they host Becker College at 7:00 p.m.
